Find out how well your Thyroid is functioning with this easy at-home test.
The thyroid is a magical gland of sorts, that is, when it’s working properly. But when your thyroid isn’t at its best, it can affect every cell in your body. An estimated 27 million Americans have thyroid disease, and about 13 million of them are undiagnosed. Find out how well yours is functioning with this easy at-home test.
The thyroid is one of the body’s rockstar glands. Every cell in the body depends on the hormones it produces, like triiodothyronine (T3), to function. T3 is like that moody friend of yours. Sometimes it binds with other substances in the body and sometimes it flies solo. Most of the T3 in your body binds to protein. The T3 that doesn’t bind to protein is called free T3 and circulates unbound in your blood. This test measures both kinds of T3 in your blood.
T4You know that antisocial friend? They are the thyroxine (T4) in the scenario of your body’s metabolic processes. The T4 in your body that doesn’t play well with others (i.e. bind to protein) is called free T3 and circulates unbound in your blood. This test measures both kinds of T4 in your blood.
TPOYour body is a battleground of sorts. It's always looking out for invaders to ward off sickness and disease. But sometimes it gets it wrong—and thinks that good guys are a threat. In a general sense, this means that your body is attacking your own thyroid gland because it thinks it’s a foreign object. The test can detect the presence of anti-TPO antibodies.
TSHTS….whaa? Though small, the thyroid gland is mighty. One of its jobs is to produce Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to release the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) into the blood. These thyroid hormones help control the rate at which the body uses energy, which is why fatigue is a common symptom of an underactive thyroid. This test measures the amount of TSH in the blood.
