The thyroid is one of the body’s rockstar glands. Every cell in the body depends on the hormones it produces, like triiodothyronine (T3), to function. T3 is like that moody friend of yours. Sometimes it binds with other substances in the body and sometimes it flies solo. Most of the T3 in your body binds to protein. The T3 that doesn’t bind to protein is called free T3 and circulates unbound in your blood. This test measures both kinds of T3 in your blood.
