Think of your metabolism as your inner furnace. This test looks at the hormones at play which can affect how you look and feel.
A lot has changed since we transitioned from hunters and gatherers into a more sedentary lifestyle. How we digest and use food is one major way we’ve adapted. This is what the smart folk refer to as metabolic processes. Your metabolism influences your energy levels, weight, body composition, and even mood. This test looks at the hormones at play which can affect how you look and feel.
CORTISOLIf you’ve ever received. late-night email from your boss, you know what this fight-or-flight hormone is about. Thanks to our cave-dwelling ancestors, our bodies have grown accustomed to producing cortisol. This hormone plays a role in the metabolism of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. It affects blood glucose levels, helps maintain blood pressure and helps regulate the immune system. Most cortisol in the blood is bound to a protein; only a small percentage is "free" and biologically active. Free cortisol is secreted into the urine and present in the saliva. This test measures the amount of cortisol in the blood.
H1ba1c“Pour some sugar on meeeee..” (Anyone remember Def Leppard?) HbA1c provides a longer-term trend, similar to an average, of how high your blood sugar levels have been over a period of time. Hemoglobin A1c, also called A1c or glycated hemoglobin, is hemoglobin with glucose attached. The A1c test evaluates the average amount of glucose in the blood over the last 2 to 3 months by measuring the percentage of glycated (glycosylated) hemoglobin.
TSHTS….whaa? Though small, the thyroid gland is mighty. One of its jobs is to produce Thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). TSH stimulates the thyroid gland to release the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) into the blood. These thyroid hormones help control the rate at which the body uses energy, which is why fatigue is a common symptom of an underactive thyroid. This test measures the amount of TSH in the blood.
